Goodbye Daylight Savings Sunset Paddle

  • Google Calendar ICS

Goodbye Daylight Savings, hello Darkness my old friend :).

We get it. The change from Daylight Savings is hard on everyone. With what already feels like a too early sunset moving an hour earlier, it starts to feel like we only see the sun for a few hours everyday.

We want to make that transition a little easier, so we’re doing the thing we know best- going for a paddle! We’re going to welcome the first early sunset of Standard Time with a mid afternoon paddle out of our Salem Willows location. We’ll paddle around the coastline of Salem Neck, checking out Salem and Beverly Harbors before watching the sunset over the Danvers River.

It’s a beautiful time of year to be out on the water, and, we hope you’ll be able to join us!

What else would I use my extra hour for? Sign me up!

Stage Fort Park- Gloucester Harbor

Gloucester Harbor is such a beautiful resource on the North Shore, but many have only seen the coastal views from parks or scenic drives, or while speeding by on a power boat. Join us this week as we explore the intricate coves along Stage Fort park, exploring in toward the wester harbor and famous Gloucester Fisherman or out toward the coast below Rt. 127 and toward Hammond Castle and Norman's Woe, as conditions allow!

Downtown Ipswich River Paddle and Pints

Downtown Ipswich River Paddle and Pints

The Ipswich River meanders through eastern Massachusetts for about 40 miles before emptying into Plum Island Sound at the southern tip of Plum Island. For most of it’s journey the river is fresh water, but as it spills over the dam in downtown Ipswich, its fresh water flow mixes with salt water as it works its way toward the sea.

We’ll paddle on the ebbing tide out of the Ipswich Town Landing, following the river as it winds its way out of town past wooded banks and into a salt marsh estuary. We’ll paddle toward the mouth of the river, past beautiful riverside homes, turning with the tide and following the river back in past golden salt marsh. Following the paddle, we’ll meet back at Ipswich Brewery for drinks, food, and good company. As always, the first round is on us!

Sounds great, sign me up!

Ipswich River Paddle

Ask us where our favorite place to paddle away from the ocean and we're bound to say the Ipswich River. We love taking paddlers to explore the river, whose true beauty can only be glimpsed from the roads as you drive by.

This time of year a feeling of openness greats us as we take to the water. The trees have dropped their leaves, and the bends in the river that once disappeared behind a cover of foliage are newly exposed. The water is usually calm in the cold December air, but retains a sense of liveliness before it settles into a mid-winter freeze.

Lake Cochituate- Natick, MA

If you’ve driven the Mass Pike through Natick, you’ve no doubt driven over Lake Cochituate. A large chain of three lakes, it’s easy to identify but hard to pronounce. Our best attempt, using local resources, is Co-chich-you-ette, but you’re welcome to your own interpretation!

We’ll be paddling from the state park, and if conditions allow, head under the Mass Pike, moving into North Lake and exploring the coves and beaches we find there. We’ll circle back around and explore a bit of Middle Lake as well before returning to the park!

This is a great opportunity to paddle something you’ve often seen but never known!

Obear Park/Starbucks Paddle

Obear Park is a little known gem on the Danvers River, nestled just upriver from where the Bass River flows into the Danvers River, and just downriver from where the Waters and Crane River converge to form the Danvers River.

The Starbucks Paddle was dreamed up years ago by one of our friends and former guides, Steve. We run this tour in honor of him and the love he had for this little part of the world. He saw the beauty of the Bass River, which ran right by his home in Goat Hill, Beverly, and knew it would make the perfect setting for an adventure paddle to Starbucks on Eliot Street. A short paddle from Obear Park in Beverly lets us ride the incoming tide all the way up the Bass River to where it meets Rt. 62. There, we'll take out on the river banks, pile into Starbucks (we recommend leaving your paddle outside :) ) and pick up the drinks that we have conveniently ordered ahead of time. We'll sip our drinks overlooking the tidal river before getting back on the water and riding the ebbing tide back out.

All paddle and collecting equipment is included in this paddle, and all levels are welcome.

Kayak Rescue Skills Clinic

Kayak Rescue Skills Clinic

Sea kayaking is a fun and exciting sport, and a great way to explore your local coastline, harbor, or bay. However, there are important skills that need to be developed in order to manage risk and allow for a safe and fun experience.

Though modern kayak designs offer a blend of stability and speed, there is still the risk that a kayak might flip over, even on relatively calm days. In the event of a capsize, it's important to know how to exit the kayak, empty it of water, and re-enter the kayak quickly and efficiently. If you plan on paddling away from the coast, where swimming to shore is not an option, these skills are crucial to returning safely.

During the kayak rescue skills clinic, we will cover, as time allows:

wet-exits
two-person T-rescues
two-person eskimo rescues
self-rescues (assisted)
self-rescues (unassisted)

5-Week Standup Paddleboard Foundations Course

For the summer of 2019, Coast to Coast Paddle is bringing back Kayak Foundations and Standup Paddleboard Foundations, two five-week workshops designed to help you take your paddling to the next level. Over the course of five weeks, we’ll build both the length and intensity of our paddles, culminating in a “graduation paddle” in which we set our sights on not just our longest paddle, but also the most exposed to conditions. We’ll learn the basics of paddling, including paddling efficiently, powerfully, and safely. We’ll also learn how to read weather forecasts and respond to unexpected changes in the weather and conditions. We’ll learn how to alter planned routes to maximize safety and enjoyment, or, if your route is set, how to use coastal topography, wind, and swell direction to reduce the risk of overexposure. Each course will be offered on different nights, so you can choose your favorite craft, or round out your paddling by tackling both!

Each session will begin with an on the water skills section, where we focus on increasingly advanced skills and strokes for maneuvering your board or kayak and paddling efficiently. After the skills section, we will go for a paddle, increasing the distance each session and applying our newly learned skills. Along the way, we'll examine the way weather, wind, and tide dictate our route choice, and how to use features of the coastal landscape to help manage conditions when weather changes unexpectedly.

Skills covered in the courses include, but are not limited to:

Efficient forward paddling
Sweep Strokes
Pivot Turns (paddle boarding)
Edging (Kayaks)
Kayak Rescues: T-rescue, Eskimo Rescue, and Self Rescue with and without paddle float
Paddleboard Flip Rescue
Towing
Draw strokes- bow, stern, feathered, sculling, and cross bow
