A short paddle from Obear Park in Beverly lets us ride the incoming tide all the way up the Bass River to where it meets Rt. 62. There, we'll take out on the river banks, pile into Starbucks (we recommend leaving your paddle outside :) ) and pick up the drinks that we have conveniently ordered ahead of time. We'll sip our drinks overlooking the tidal river before getting back on the water and riding the ebbing tide back out.
Lying just a half mile off the coast of Beverly Farms, Misery Island easily captures the imagination of any paddler that dreams of adventures beyond the waves. Close enough for an easy day trip, but exposed enough to satisfy the adventure in all of us, Misery Island is a paddle you'll definitely want to try!
This week we're adventuring to Misery Island!
The cold weather has moved in, but that doesn't mean the paddling has to stop! In fact, this is a great time to get out and explore some of our favorite islands without the worry of heavy boat traffic and wake. Misery Island lies just a half mile off of Beverly Farms at its closest point. We'll launch from West Beach in Beverly Farms and paddle a little over a mile to the beach on Great Misery. From there we'll hike around the island, exploring the remains of an old casino and looking for remnants of the golf course that use to draw socialites from Boston in the early 1900's. After sharing passing around some hot beverages, we'll paddle back to our take out after one of the most memorable on the water experiences!
Wetsuits or drysuits are required, but we have them available for rent if you don't have your own! We'll meet at the shop at 8:15am and then carpool to West Beach in Beverly Farms. If you already have your own gear, you can meet us right at the beach around 9am!
We want to be straightforward with you- At this point the weather looks absolutely terrible for next Saturday. But we're optimistic :). If you'd like to sign up for the trip, shoot us an email or give us a call...we'll make the final call by Friday evening. This one is worth taking a chance on, so go ahead and reach out now!

We'll be hosting a workshop this coming Thursday to talk about gear, conditions, and what to expect on your first winter paddle. We'll talk about the differences between wetsuits and drysuits, how to keep your hands and feet warm, and how to determine if conditions are safe to go out.
Less than a mile offshore, Misery Island offers a rugged and natural landscape with a rich history that can easily be reached by paddleboard or kayak. During this three hour paddle event, we'll launch from West Beach in Beverly Farms and journey to the strait between Great and Little Misery, where the remains of the Steamship City of Rockland lie just beneath the shallow waters. After landing on Misery, we'll walk the nature trails on the island, past the remains of a casino, cottages, water tower, and pumping station. After taking our time exploring the island, we'll paddle back to West Beach.
Open to all skill levels!
Fall on the Ipswich River. Cool river valley breezes break up the warm sunshine and rustles a single yellow leaf from its branch. As it falls gently toward the water, its reflection floats up to meet it, and we drift on our boards, thinking, it can't get much better than this.
Until it does :).
We're teaming up with Chicken or the Eggplant to bring Paddle and Picnic to the Ipswich! We'll paddle beneath the burnt red and gold trees, hopefully spot some deer and beaver, then pull off the river to have a picnic with some delicious, healthy food (and some less healthy, but equally delicious desserts). We'll rest for a bit, enjoying some good company and light conversation, before paddling back.
Rachel's meals are gluten-free, packed with protein, free from added sugars, and all natural, so you'll have clean energy for the paddle back!
Join Us for our Fall edition of Paddle & Pints on Sunday October 1st!
We start with an hour and a half paddle, launching at 4:30pm and paddling around the coastlines of Beverly and Salem as the sun dips low in the sky. After that, we head on over to our favorite bar next to the shop, The Indo, for a pint (or drink of your choice) on us!
This event has limited space- so get your spot early!
Salem Sound has so many little, rocky islands that dot its interior. These islands and shoals are what made historic maritime shipping so risky, but make paddling today so great! Between the closest island to Beverly, Great Haste, and the furthest, Halfway Rock, there lie at least a half dozen more islands.
During this three hour paddle, we'll stop first on Great Haste, as it's Aaron's favorite and a great place to scout the rest of the islands. From there, depending on conditions, we'll head South East past Coney Island and Grey's Rock toward Marblehead, or North East toward Beverly Farms, skirting Eagle Island and within sight of the Gooseberries before following the coastline back in.
Since this is an extended trip across open water, paddlers must have experience paddling in bumpy conditions at a consistent pace. As a benchmark, we suggest paddlers be able to paddle with an average pace of 3mph for an extended period of time. We will be paddling a minimum of 4 miles and if conditions are favorable may paddle as many as 8.
